How VAT works for tradespeople

VAT (Value Added Tax) is added on top of your net price, which is the amount you charge before tax. As a tradesperson, you collect VAT from your clients and remit it to your tax authority. Your client pays the gross amount; you forward the tax portion.

Rates vary by country: 15% in South Africa, 20% in the UK, 10% in Australia. If you work across borders or with international clients, always confirm the applicable rate with a local accountant.

If you are not yet VAT registered, you do not charge VAT, but many countries require registration once you cross a revenue threshold.
